🔬 For grown-ups: how this is worked out

Each stage contributes Δv = Isp · g₀ · ln(m₀/m_f), summed from the top down, with 300 s of specific impulse and 4 t of dry mass per stage. Orbit is treated as 9,400 m/s to include gravity and drag losses. Thrust uses the real Merlin figure of 845 kN per engine. The logarithm is why doubling the fuel does not double the speed — and why a second stage beats a bigger first one.
